3slipperyApr 22, 2010
My wife has this mat or one very similar from Manduka, that is about 2 years old. I remember her whining a bit at the time it was new about grip, of course, it wasn't my problem so i paid little attention. i have since used her "broken in" mat, and it is awesome! So i bought one. She warned me it would be slippery at first, now guess who's whining about a slippery mat! It has a coating on the surface that is very stubborn for people with sweaty feet. Your sweaty feet can cause a sweaty feat, if you know what i mean. I don't know how many sessions it will take to wear off the finish, and i feel like for a hundred bucks, Manduka should present you with a sticky mat. I'm currently wearing socks, which i don't like, but my hands do still slip, as they are just as sweaty as my feet. So be warned, if your feet sweat, you're praying twist might become a praying split. On the bright side, if you are looking for an extra hard workout, try your favorite routine on slippery mat, your muscles will reward you!

3Average for Plyo WorkoutsMar 21, 2010
I only rate this mat three stars for the cushioning; however, given that I have not tried any other mats this could be the best value. For anyone over 6 feet I would suggest going with the larger mat. On hard surfaces this mat is very stable while doing quick movements; however it does slide some, but not to where I do not feel safe which is why I considered giving a higher rating if it were not for the claim that the mat is slip resistant when wet. I would say the mat does not move very much but your feet/hands may slip if the mat is not dry.

In summary the mat is only average for intense plyo workouts, but it does provide a nicer surface to do workouts on (I use for the INSANITY workouts) than bare hard floors.

5not cheap, but sometimes you DO get what you pay forJan 21, 2010
I hemmed and hawed about the painful price tag of this mat for a long time, but finally took the plunge and ordered it. I've done yoga for about 8 years off and on, presently am not a high-frequency yoga practitioner, maybe 2-3 times a week tops, but I do use it for stretching and core work as well almost every day.

Well, I have to say that I've been very pleased. Even though it appears not to be hugely thicker than my el cheapo $15 Reebok mat, the Manduka has a very comforting solidity and firmness to it that's hard to describe...but it just MAKES me want to use it, and when I use it, it makes want to hold poses longer for some reason, lol! So hopefully with this around I will become more regular in my yoga practice, largely out of guilt at how much I paid for it.

Out of the box yes it's slippery until wiped down with some warm water and soap. No biggy. About it being slippery when sweat, well rather than blowing $45 for a Manduka mat towel, I find that my $4 terry hand towel from Wallyworld gets the job done just fine.

The other thing I love about this mat is its color---a dark charcoal, matte black. I have it facing my meditation cushion and it's very soothing to just look at it while I'm meditating. But that's just me, probably. : )

3Warning: Slippery when WetJan 20, 2010
Depending who you are (and perhaps more appropriately, how much you sweat), this mat may be the best thing or the worst. On the plus side, this mat is the most durable and stable of any mat I have tried, and I have been doing yoga for many years. Also, the bigger version at 85 inches gives you more room to work than almost any other mat on the market. Once you scrub the mat down with soap and water after you first get it (see other reviews), this mat is also sticky WHEN DRY. However, if you sweat and get the mat wet at all, it becomes VERY slippery. This has really been a problem for more rigorous vinyasa flows. You can buy a sticky towel to put on top of the mat to stop the slipping, but buying a towel for another $45 is hard to stomach after paying almost $100 for this mat. If you sweat, I would highly recommend the Jade yoga mats instead. They remain sticky when wet, but are less durable than the Manduka. Namaste.

5Best mat I've ever used!Jan 18, 2010
I just recently purchased this maduka mat in order to start my work on the p90X program. I had originally purchased a yoga mat from my local walmart and after a couple uses it became stained with sweat and slipped all over the place. After this one was delivered I immediately started using it with the Yoga X dvd's and the Plyometric dvd's and it was fantastic. It did not move around at all (unlike the one I bought from walmart) and the best part was it provided a grip that is second to none.

I would seriously recommend this mat for anyone who needs a reliable Yoga mat.
