As a Laxative
Adults 12 years and older: 5 capsules with 8 ounces of water or other liquid (swallow 1 capsule at a time). Take at the first sign of irregularity. Can be taken up to 3 times daily if needed or as recommended by a doctor. Generally produces effect in 12 to 72 hours.
6 to 11 years: Consider use of Metamucil powder or water products.
Under 6 years: Consult a doctor regarding use of Metamucil power or water products.
As a Fiber Supplement
Adults 12 and over: 2 to 6 capsules (swallow 1 at a time), taken with 8 ounces of liquid, up to 3 times daily. For lowering cholesterol, take 6 capsules. Can be taken before or after meals. Warnings
Taking this product without enough liquid may cause product to swell and block the throat, causing choking. Do not take this product if you have difficulty in swallowing. If you experience chest pain, vomiting, or difficulty in breathing or swallowing after taking this product, seek immediate medical attention. May cause allergic reaction in people sensitive to inhaled or ingested psyllium. Keep out of the reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, seek professional assistance or contact a poison control center immediately. Before using this product, consult a doctor if you have a sudden change in bowel habits persisting for 2 weeks; if you have abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or rectal bleeding; if you are considering use of this product as part of a cholesterol-lowering program. If constipation persists for longer than a week, consult a doctor as it may be a sign of a serious medical condition. Laxatives may affect how well other medicines work. If you are taking an oral prescription medicine, take this product at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after the prescribed medicine. As your body adjusts to increased fiber intake, you may experience changes in bowel habits or minor bloating. Store at room temperature tightly closed to protect from humidity.  Much better than liquid formJul 19, 2008
I actually ordered this to see if it would help reverse a frequent condition I have with loose stools. I had heard that taking extra fiber often does. Sense taking the Metamucil capsules, I seem to be almost back to normal but I can't really say if it is the result of taking the Metamucil or not. My only complaint is that you have to remember to drink lots of water or possibly suffer the consequences. Sometimes, I forget.

If you want something that works better and costs less, get a tub of psyllium husk and chug away. The problem is that drinking husk it is not as convenient as taking it in pill form. Plus you don't gag with the pills. The down side is that for cholesterol lowering purposes, and to get moving, you need to take 6 a day. It all adds up over time, but 2-160 count bottles gives you over 50 days for under $25 if you subscribe.

this is a great product for people who need more fiber or for people who have diverticulitus, it keeps everything moving through.
